The Leksell Gamma Knife focuses the radiation of 201 individual
Cobalt-60 sources through the ports of a collimator helmet
to the geometric center of the helmet. This precise collimation
together wtih sub-millimeter positioning accuracy, combine
to produce an extremely well defined focal point. The shape
of the targeted structure is then matched to the amalgamation
of several spherical targets or 'shots'. This conformation
to shape of the lesion being treated is a vital aspect of
the Gamma Knife surgery planning, as it is rare for a brain
tumour to be round and homogenous.
